COMMONWEALTH, Wis. - Wisconsin First Lady Tonette Walker was in Florence County on Friday as part of her "Walk with Walker" initiative to promote fitness and Wisconsin tourism. About 25 local residents joined her for a two-mile walk at the LaSalle Falls trail in Commonwealth. LaSalle Falls is a 20-foot waterfall on the Pine River.
Walker said that the idea for "Walk with Walker" started when her husband, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, was the Milwaukee County Executive. "He used to walk with his employees during their lunch break and we were interested in keeping it going," she explained.
In June 2011, Walker started taking her initiative on the road to various scenic locations across the state of Wisconsin. The LaSalle Falls walk on Friday was her 15th outing. Although the exercise component is important, Walker pointed out that the initiative is so much more than that.
"Yes, it's about being healthy, but what happens is, I get a chance to talk with Wisconsin residents while we enjoy some lesser-known scenic areas of our state," she said. Walker added that she has been through Florence County before, but this is the first time that she has had a chance to enjoy a visit to the area.
"Walk with Walker" events are held year round all over Wisconsin. For information on upcoming events or to read Walker's blog about her past events, go to walkwithwalkerwi.org.
